Mike Lowery, Champion of Character
The Edmond City Council recognized Edmond Santa Fe Band Director Mike Lowery during their Monday night city council meeting, for the character trait of punctuality.
Mike Lowery exemplifies the character trait of punctuality (vs. tardiness) by showing esteem for others by doing the right thing at the right time. The trait is exemplified by setting priorities so that one can do what matters most.
During Lowery’s long career as band director within the Edmond school system, he has demonstrated punctuality by teaching that when students are late, they are being disrespectful to others.
Santa Fe High School Band students quickly learn that when Lowery gives them a time to be somewhere, they should actually be there 15 minutes early.
“When going on trips, he always gives them two times,” wrote Buck and Mary Stewart, who nominated Lowery on behalf of the West Edmond Musical Enrichment Association (WEMEA) and the Edmond Santa Fe H.S. Band Boosters. “One for when the buses will load and the second for when the buses will roll – and that’s exactly when things happen. The kids have a term for it – ‘Lowery Time’.”
During a recent trip to London England, where the SFHS Band participated in the 2006 London New Year’s Day Parade, the tour guide assigned to the band commented that she was “very impressed with how punctual the group was,” saying that it “was not characteristic of the typical American groups she’s guided.”
The response from the band kids was, “She obviously didn’t know Mr. Lowery!”
Traditionally, near the end of the school year, at each Band Banquet, Lowery presents each graduating senior band member with an alarm clock to take with them to college or on to their careers; a reminder to make the most of each day, to keep them on time. And almost without exception, when the seniors offer their reflections on their experiences, the subject of punctuality was synonymous with “Mr. Lowery,’” wrote Stewart.
The City of Edmond and the Character Council of Edmond expressed their sincerest thanks to Mike Lowery for representing Edmond as a “champion of character.”
