To designate the city of Edmond as a city of character through the promotion and development of character traits in all aspects of community life.
In July 2001, then Mayor Saundra Naifeh designated Edmond as a
“City of Character.” At that time, a board of directors was established to bring the character message to Edmond. The Character Council of Edmond is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization incorporated by the State of Oklahoma in July of 2003. In 2004, the Council was recognized for its exempt status under the Internal Revenue Service Code.
The council is a local Edmond agency comprised entirely of volunteers from different career areas whose focus is reserved for the Edmond area alone. The Board meets the fourth Monday of the month except in December and May.
